📖Zakat Basics

What is Zakat?

?

Zakat is the third pillar of Islam: an obligatory annual charitable contribution of 2.5% of qualifying wealth. It purifies wealth and supports those in need. The word 'Zakat' means 'purification' and 'growth' in Arabic.

Who is required to pay Zakat?

?

Every adult Muslim who possesses wealth above the nisab (minimum threshold) for a complete lunar year (hawl). This includes both men and women. Zakat is also due on the wealth of minors, according to most scholars.

What is the nisab threshold?

?

Nisab is the minimum amount of wealth that makes Zakat obligatory. It is measured in gold (87.48 grams) or silver (612.36 grams). The ringgit value changes daily with gold and silver prices, so check current rates or use our calculator. Separately, each Malaysian state zakat body publishes its own annual nisab value in ringgit, generally based on the gold standard.

How often do I pay Zakat?

?

Once per lunar year (hawl = 354 days). You pick a Zakat date and calculate annually. Many Muslims choose Ramadan for the additional blessings, but any date works. If you use an employer salary deduction scheme, monthly deductions simply spread the same annual obligation.

What is the Zakat rate?

?

2.5% (or 1/40th) of your qualifying wealth above nisab. This rate applies to most types of wealth including cash, gold, silver, investments, and business assets. Agricultural produce (zakat pertanian) follows different rates set by the state zakat bodies.

Can I pay Zakat in installments?

?

Yes. You can pay Zakat in installments throughout the year, and even pay in advance before your Zakat date. However, your total payment for the year should equal 2.5% of your qualifying wealth.

🏛️Zakat & Malaysian Law

Who administers zakat in Malaysia?

?

Zakat is a state matter, administered by each State Islamic Religious Council and its collection body, such as Pusat Pungutan Zakat (PPZ-MAIWP) for the Federal Territories and Lembaga Zakat Selangor. Each body sets its own annual nisab value, runs collection counters and portals, and distributes funds to the eight Quranic categories of recipients within the state.

Does zakat reduce my income tax?

?

Yes. Zakat paid to an authorised state zakat body qualifies for a rebate against your personal income tax, up to the amount of tax charged for the year. Keep the official receipts and claim the rebate in your annual filing. Zakat paid directly to individuals does not generate a receipt, so it cannot be claimed.

What is zakat pendapatan (income zakat)?

?

Zakat on employment income, widely practiced in Malaysia. State bodies provide calculators that apply 2.5% to gross or net income above the nisab equivalent, and many employers offer monthly salary deduction schemes that remit directly to the state body. It complements, not replaces, zakat on your accumulated wealth.

What is zakat pertanian?

?

Zakat on agricultural produce: classically one-tenth of the harvest from rain-fed land and one-twentieth from irrigated land, due at harvest time rather than on a lunar-year cycle. Malaysian state zakat bodies assess it mainly on rice cultivation.

🧮Calculating Zakat

How do I calculate Zakat?

?

1) Add up all zakatable assets (cash, gold, silver, investments, business inventory). 2) Subtract qualifying debts due within the year. 3) Check if the net total exceeds nisab. 4) If yes, pay 2.5% of the total. Use our free Zakat calculator for an easy step-by-step calculation.

Do I calculate Zakat on total wealth or just savings?

?

On total zakatable wealth, which includes cash, gold, silver, investments, business inventory, and receivables. Your primary home, car, clothes, and personal items are NOT included.

Can I deduct debts from my Zakat calculation?

?

Yes, most scholars allow deducting debts that are due within the current year (or the coming 12 months). Long-term obligations like home financing instalments are typically only deducted for the current year's payments.

Do I use gold or silver nisab?

?

Most scholars recommend using the gold nisab (more conservative, higher threshold). Some allow using silver nisab (lower threshold, meaning more people would pay Zakat). Our calculator uses the gold standard by default.

What if my wealth fluctuates during the year?

?

Calculate Zakat based on your wealth at your Zakat date. If your wealth dropped below nisab at any point during the year, the hawl (year) resets according to many scholars.

💰Assets & Exemptions

Is my house subject to Zakat?

?

No. Your primary residence is exempt from Zakat, regardless of value. However, investment properties held for resale ARE zakatable at market value.

Is my car subject to Zakat?

?

No. Personal vehicles used for transportation are exempt. However, if you're a car dealer, vehicles in your inventory are zakatable as trade goods.

Is my jewelry zakatable?

?

Gold and silver jewelry: scholars differ. The Shafi'i position, dominant in Malaysia, exempts jewelry in regular personal use up to the customary limit (uruf) set by your state zakat body; amounts above the uruf, and gold kept as savings, are zakatable. The Hanafi position treats all gold and silver jewelry as zakatable. Weigh your gold in grams and value it at today's rate.

What about retirement savings (EPF, PRS)?

?

This is debated. For EPF and PRS balances, the conservative view is to pay Zakat annually on the accessible balance. A common alternative view treats locked amounts as non-possessed until withdrawal, so zakat falls due when you can access the money, such as after age 55 for EPF. Consult a scholar or your state zakat body's guidance.

Is cryptocurrency zakatable?

?

Yes, most contemporary scholars agree. Calculate 2.5% of current market value of all crypto holdings. See our cryptocurrency Zakat guide for details.

Are prize bonds zakatable?

?

Yes, treat their value as zakatable wealth like cash. Separately, many scholars consider prize-linked products problematic (a form of gambling or interest); the halal alternatives in Malaysia are Islamic savings accounts, Islamic fixed deposits, and Shariah-compliant funds.

Do I pay Zakat on money owed to me?

?

If you expect to collect the debt, include it in your Zakat calculation. Bad debts or money unlikely to be recovered can be excluded.

🤲Paying & Distributing Zakat

Who can receive Zakat?

?

The Quran specifies 8 categories (Surah At-Tawbah 9:60): the poor, the needy, Zakat administrators, those whose hearts are to be reconciled, freeing captives, those in debt, in the way of Allah, and travelers in need.

Can I give Zakat to family members?

?

You cannot give Zakat to your parents, grandparents, children, or grandchildren (people you're obligated to support). You CAN give to siblings, aunts, uncles, and more distant relatives if they qualify.

Can I give Zakat to non-Muslims?

?

The majority of scholars say Zakat is for Muslims only. However, Sadaqah (voluntary charity) can be given to anyone.

Where can I distribute Zakat in Malaysia?

?

The standard route is your state zakat body, which distributes to the eight Quranic categories within the state and issues receipts valid for the income tax rebate. Some scholars also permit giving directly to eligible individuals when you know genuine need; that route earns no tax receipt. Check your own state's position on direct distribution.

Is Zakat al-Fitr different from Zakat al-Mal?

?

Yes. Zakat al-Fitr is a specific charity paid at the end of Ramadan before Eid prayer. It's a fixed amount per person, typically the value of about 2.5 kg of staple food such as wheat or its cash equivalent. Zakat al-Mal (on wealth) is the 2.5% annual obligation discussed throughout this guide.

Can I pay Zakat early?

?

Yes. You can pay Zakat before your Zakat date arrives. This is especially useful during Ramadan or when you encounter someone in urgent need.
